Further information

The most famous wild horses are the American Mustangs. The name Mustang is derived from the Spanish word 'Mestena', which means 'a group of horses'. Mexican vaqueros probably called them like that and the Americans just adopted it. In the past, millions of feral mustangs roamed the open count ... More about the horse breed Mustang (american)

Hobbles is a 12-year-old, 14.2hh gelded mustang that has a nice blend of performance and leisure riding. He is an exceptionally smart horse that aims to please his rider, making him one of our favorites to ride.

Aside from his eye-catching looks, one compliment I receive the most about him is his versatility! He can be ridden as a bridle horse, put under an English saddle, ridden as a performance horse, or taken down the trails. He is very light and soft in the mouth and knows how to move off your legs! We’ve recently started asking him to do some jumping, endurance training, and patterning in the barrels. He is not a horse that you have to keep pushing to stay in forward motion. Whichever gait you ask him to be in, he will stay in it until you are ready to change it up. We timed his trot, and he averaged a 7-minute mile with a working heart rate of 64 beats per minute (bpm) and a resting heart rate of 48 bpm. I genuinely think someone could make a nice endurance horse out of him!

Being such a versatile horse, he has proven himself to be exceptional on the trails. Crossing water, fallen timber, rocky trails, or climbing steep hills effortlessly. We have high-lined him at a 6-day chuck wagon race/cowboy gathering and mingled through the crowds. He prefers to ride alone but will ride with a group.

I’ve kept him barefoot since his feet are solid, but if you do want to shoe him, he will wear a size two shoe. He’s an easy keeper and requires no maintenance. The kind of horse you can turn out, the will stay broke. No buck or cold back to him. He can be cautious when you first catch him, and he can lean towards being an anxious horse if he doesn’t have a trustworthy leader with clear communication. He highly values trust and soft hands. Tends to like being ridden by women more than men, but will certainly tolerate men if they are trustworthy and have horsemanship. He needs someone with at least an intermediate rider skill set.
