Smokey “The Wonder Horse”

Smokey “The Wonder Horse” will make you wonder if he’s even a horse—he’s closer to a human than any horse we’ve ever met. Smokey is a well-built gelding standing between 14.3 and 15 hands high. He’s 4 years old and boasts striking dark grulla markings, including pencil-thin zebra stripes on his face that everyone loves.
Smokey came out of Utah as part of the BLM Wild Horse Adoption Program as a colt. Since then, he has been trained using natural horsemanship and liberty training methods. He knows how to lay down for mounting from the ground and will also lay down for you to dismount from the saddle. This is an excellent feature for anyone with knee or hip issues or for those who are handicapped. If laying down isn’t the easiest option, he will also sidepass over to a trailer fender, truck bed, gate, or tree stump to assist you in mounting.
He responds beautifully to leg pressure and rides without a bridle. He can be guided with a rein around his neck—or even without one at all—just by using your feet. He’ll back, spin, turn, sidepass both ways, lope, and slide stop, all from leg cues alone. Smokey has one of the easiest and softest lopes you’ll ever sit on!
Smokey also knows several impressive tricks: he plays kickball, counts with both front feet, rears on command, walks down a 12-foot crosstie, hops up on a pedestal or truck bed, sits on his rump, and bows.
We’ve exposed him to just about everything (literally) to try and scare him, and we believe he is as close to bombproof as a horse can get. He’s been camping, used for working cattle—including roping calves—and trail ridden for hundreds of miles, many of them with 9-year-old Konner in the saddle. He’s been ridden through town, right down Main Street, across railroad tracks, through the car wash, vacuumed with a car vacuum, down sidewalks, down steps, up ramps, through the Hardee’s drive-thru, inside Bishop’s Tire Center, and even through the bank to make a deposit!
We’ve ponied other horses off him and used him to help break colts to lead. He will drag anything you ask him to. He’s been ridden around farm equipment, ATVs, large noisy tarps, and has even had guns fired off his back. Smokey is not spooky at all, no matter where he goes or what he’s asked to do.
He’s been exposed to all kinds of wildlife—deer, turkey, cows, dogs—and he’ll go anywhere he’s asked. He’s been ridden many miles through the mountains of Eastern Kentucky and has faced every trail obstacle imaginable. He’ll tackle steep slopes, cross deep creeks, step over downed trees, and navigate rough terrain—all while staying sure-footed.
He’s traffic-safe and has been ridden around cars, semis, log trucks, and dump trucks. Smokey is one of the friendliest horses you’ll ever meet—he’ll follow you around and even go for a jog with you. He has an outstanding attitude and gives his best in everything he’s asked to do.
