Meet ✨Montgomery✨ a four year-old, 16.2 hand, Shire/Friesian/QH cross gelding. This well put together man has the sweetest temperament and has quickly made himself a barn favorite! Monty is also interchangeably known as Whiskers and Mustache around our barn. No, seriously- he probably has a better mustache than most of the men in your life…😂 -And while the mustache definitely makes him stand out, his overall sweet demeanor, safe mind, and talent under saddle and harness is what truly makes him stand out. He is wise beyond his years and was simply born quiet. He rides both Western and English, and drives both single and double. This boy even knows some tricks; he will lay down and sit like a dog on command!
Monty has been started slowly and correctly under saddle. Exposed to a variety of different environments and disciplines, without anything being drilled or overdone. He is smart, athletic, a nice mover, and he can continue to go any direction and succeed. When people talk about wanting the perfect “in-between” draft cross that can still be athletic while having substance- this guy is what they’re describing. He’s sturdy, sure footed, a floaty mover, and a comfortable ride! He’s been on many trail rides to ensure a good foundation to his education. We would argue that he is already quite the trail master! He just tackled a hunter pace last weekend, and we couldn’t have asked him to do a better job. You can put him anywhere in the group and he’ll happily go along on a loose rein. He is very courageous and will lead even better than some of the older horses! He has a calm, quiet personality, and has proven to be incredibly brave.
Monty has flown through our desensitization program like it was a breeze. He doesn’t mind the tarp, flag, smoke, equipment, traffic, dogs (and other various animals)- and he’s even walked through fire without batting an eye. You can ride him right to town without having a worry in the world. He’s even gone through the Chipotle drive-thru to pick up lunch! Monty is quite the guy, and once he gets to know you, he will be your best friend. He’s the type of horse that will bond with you, and once you have his trust, he will do anything for you! All it takes to win Monty over is a handful of treats and a soft gentle touch. He is a sensitive soul that is a once in a lifetime horse.
In the ring, Monty has a nice walk trot and canter both directions. He’s responsive, forward thinking and a quick learner. You never have to ask him twice. His trot is adjustable. He moves off of leg, and he’s just starting to learn going on the bit and doing more collection work. His transitions are coming along incredibly well, and he has the best brakes with just a “whoa” or a sit back. He neck reins and direct reins, and once you get done riding and hop off of him, he will follow you around like a puppy- no lead rope needed! This superstar has been lightly started over jumps, both in the ring and cross country. He even did some coops on the pace! He is so naturally talented with his form, technique, and spatial awareness. He has the cutest knees over jumps (seriously look at the pictures) and endless scope! He doesn’t get rushy or hot. You can jump around, and then come back down and walk on a loose rein. If someone continues him in this direction, the options are endless!
In the barn, Monty is always respectful and easy to handle. He stands on the cross ties or straight tie and will stand as still as a statue as long as you want him to. He’s quiet to both groom and tack up, and seems to love the attention. He’s behaved in his stall and for the vet and farrier. He loads right into the trailer and turns out in a mixed herd. We all adore our mustache around here--and we want the best home for him. If it weren’t for a full barn and an already large collection of personal horses, Caleb has sworn he’d be keeping him for himself!
